Azure DevOps Server and TFS: end of support dates
Every Azure DevOps Server and Team Foundation Server release with a year in its name follows Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy: about five years of mainstream support, then five years of extended support with security updates only. The next one to run out is TFS 2017, on January 11, 2027.
The dates
From the Microsoft Lifecycle pages (dates in Pacific Time):
| Release | Mainstream ends | Extended ends |
|---|---|---|
| TFS 2015 (Update 4) | October 13, 2020 | October 14, 2025 |
| TFS 2017 (Update 3) | January 11, 2022 | January 11, 2027 |
| TFS 2018 | January 10, 2023 | January 11, 2028 |
| Azure DevOps Server 2019 (Update 1) | April 9, 2024 | April 10, 2029 |
| Azure DevOps Server 2020 | October 14, 2025 | October 8, 2030 |
| Azure DevOps Server 2022 | January 11, 2028 | January 11, 2033 |
| Azure DevOps Server (no year, December 8, 2025) | Modern Lifecycle Policy: no fixed end date | |
Within a release, only its last update stays supported: the original release of Azure DevOps Server 2019 left support on January 12, 2021 (Update 1 carries it to 2029), TFS 2017's original release on January 8, 2019, and TFS 2015's Update 3 on July 10, 2018.
Microsoft's own posts sometimes give the next day. The DevOps blog's post on Azure DevOps Server RC (26H2), October 27, 2026, says extended support for TFS 2017 ends on January 12, 2027. It is the same end: the Lifecycle page stores it as 6:59:59 AM UTC on January 12, which is the night of January 11 in Pacific Time.
Mainstream and extended support
Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy:
- Mainstream support: security updates, non-security updates, and requests for design changes and features.
- Extended support: security updates at no additional cost and paid support. No non-security updates, design changes or new features.
- Both require the release's latest update (service pack) to be installed.
The new Azure DevOps Server without a year follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy: it stays in support while you keep it current with the updates Microsoft publishes, and Microsoft gives at least 12 months' notice before ending support if there is no successor.
Its next update is out as a release candidate: Azure DevOps Server RC (26H2), October 27, 2026. Microsoft supports a direct upgrade to it from Azure DevOps Server 2019 or TFS 2015 and newer, and from the RC to the final release (release notes).
Pull requests on these servers from IntelliJ IDEA and Rider
Azure DevOps Pull Requests, a plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later and Android Studio, works with TFS 2018 Update 2 or later, Azure DevOps Server 2019, 2020, 2022 and later, and Azure DevOps Services. It was tested on real TFS 2018 Update 3 and Azure DevOps Server 2019 Update 1, 2020 Update 1 and 2022 installations, not yet on the 26H2 release candidate. TFS 2017 and older are not supported.
