Azure DevOps pull request notifications, and when the emails do not arrive
Azure DevOps tells you about a pull request by email, through notification subscriptions. Below is what it sends by default, where you change it, and what to check when an email does not come, from Microsoft's Default and supported notifications, Manage your personal notifications, Determine recipients of notification emails, Change your preferred email address and the Notification FAQs.
What you get by default
Four default subscriptions in the Code (Git) category cover pull requests. Each sends only to people who have a role in the event:
- Pull request reviewers added or removed: on a pull request you created, someone (you or another user) is added or removed as a reviewer.
- Pull request changes: changes to a pull request you created, or one where you are a reviewer.
- Comment added to pull request: a comment on a pull request you created, or in a discussion you take part in.
- Pull request completion failures: a pull request you created fails to complete.
For anything else, for example every new pull request in a project, add your own subscription: User settings, Notifications, New subscription, category Code (Git), template A pull request is created or updated, then narrow it with fields. It goes to your preferred email unless you give another address.
When an email does not arrive
- The address: emails go to your preferred email, set under User settings, Profile. It is one address for all your organizations, a change can take up to 24 hours, and with Microsoft Entra ID it is managed there and read-only in Azure DevOps.
- A subscription turned off: on User settings, Notifications, the globe icon marks a default subscription; its State toggle is gray when you opted out. Turning one off there changes only your own emails. Subscriptions at different levels are independent: one still on at your level sends even when it is off at the project level.
- A team asked instead of you: when a team or a group is the reviewer, its delivery settings decide who gets the email: Deliver to individual members (usually the default), Deliver to email address, or Do not deliver. A team that sets nothing takes the organization's setting (Organization settings, Global notifications), which is either Deliver to individual members or Do not deliver, and the dialog does not show whether the value is set or inherited. Teams and groups without the View project-level information permission are left out.
- Your own action: Skip initiator leaves out the person who caused the event, on most event types, so you do not get an email about your own push or comment.
- Azure DevOps Server: an SMTP server has to be configured; until it is, members do not even see the Notifications option.
The emails are HTML only, and in English whatever your profile language.
Review requests in IntelliJ IDEA
Azure DevOps Pull Requests, a plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later and Android Studio, lists the pull requests of Azure DevOps Services and Azure DevOps Server in an IDE tool window. While the tool window is open, it reads the list again every 5 minutes and shows an IDE notification for each new pull request that waits for your vote: you are a reviewer and have neither voted nor declined, or a team or group of yours in the project is asked and has no vote yet, and it is not a draft; Open selects it. It asks the REST API with your personal access token, so it does not depend on email, your subscriptions or a team's delivery settings. It tells you only about review requests: comments, votes and completions still reach you through Azure DevOps. Turn it off in Settings | Tools | Azure DevOps Pull Requests. The review inbox and its notifications are free; voting, commenting, resolving, completing and creating pull requests are Pro, with a 30-day trial.
