"MongoDB cannot start: Linux kernel versions 6.19 and newer" on GitHub's Ubuntu runners

A mongo:8.0 or mongo:8.3 service container stops a second after it starts, and the tests that need it fail. MongoDB 8.0 and later crash on Linux 6.19 to 7.0.13 because of an rseq bug in the TCMalloc they ship (SERVER-121912), so newer builds refuse to start on those kernels, and from 8.0.30, 8.3.9 and 9.0 they let 7.0.14 and later through (SERVER-125742). The ubuntu-24.04 and ubuntu-26.04 images now boot kernel 7.0.0-1017-azure, which is built from upstream 7.0.14 and has the fix. But Ubuntu keeps the release string at 7.0.0 for the whole series, and mongod reads that string, so it refuses anyway (SERVER-136848).

What it looks like

The mongod log:

{"s":"F","c":"CONTROL","id":12257600,"msg":"MongoDB cannot start: Linux kernel versions 6.19 and newer has a known incompatibility with this version of MongoDB. See https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SERVER-121912 for more information."}

In the job, depending on how MongoDB is started:

A re-run does not help any more: the runner-images maintainers said on November 3 that the latest 24.04 image, 20261101.360, has the same kernel, and the 26.04 images have had it since October.

Which MongoDB versions start

Fixes

Move to 9.0, if your code and data allow a major upgrade:

services:
  mongo:
    image: mongo:9.0
    ports:
      - 27017:27017

Or run the jobs that need MongoDB on ubuntu-22.04, the workaround the runner-images maintainers give. Its kernel is 6.8.0-1070-azure, where 8.0 and 8.3 start:

jobs:
  tests:
    runs-on: ubuntu-22.04

Pinning ubuntu-24.04 does not help: that image has the new kernel. The maintainers said they will not pin or downgrade the kernel for this. When mongo:8.0 reaches 8.0.37 (or mongo:8.3 reaches 8.3.16), the 8.x tags start again on the new kernel; check the version a tag points to before you move back, since the listed fix versions have changed once.

Two projects report that mongo:8.0 starts on these kernels with GLIBC_TUNABLES=glibc.pthread.rseq=1 in the container's environment (debezium dbz #1945, maple-mcp #1). It changes how memory allocation runs inside mongod, so treat it as a stopgap for tests, not for production.
