Jenkins Blue Ocean is deprecated: what to use instead

Blue Ocean, the Jenkins interface at /blue, has been deprecated since July 2026. It keeps working where it is installed, but nothing new is coming to it, and a new Jenkins no longer leads you to it. The Jenkins project names two plugins instead: Pipeline Graph View, which the setup wizard now installs, and Pipeline: Stage View. Neither does everything Blue Ocean did.

What changed

The two plugins the Jenkins project names instead

Pipeline Graph View: the documentation calls it actively maintained and says it provides the most crucial features of Blue Ocean. It adds a Stages link to each Pipeline run (the run's address followed by stages/): the run's stages as a graph, nested stages and parallel branches included, each step with its result, and the log as it is written. It is installed on 41.4% of controllers. The latest version (1078, late October 2026) needs Jenkins 2.585 or later; the update center gives an older Jenkins the newest version it can run (1053 for 2.580.1).

Pipeline: Stage View: the older table on a Pipeline job's page, one column per stage and one row per build, with the log of each stage and buttons for input steps in its cells. It is installed on 60.6% of controllers; version 2.41 came out in April 2026, and its page has no deprecation notice.

The setup wizard of Jenkins 2.580.1 (Install suggested plugins) installs Pipeline and Pipeline Graph View, and not Stage View: neither the Pipeline plugin nor Graph View depends on it. So a Jenkins set up today has Graph View's Stages page, and no Stage View table unless someone installs it.

What neither replaces

The plugins' pages say it themselves: they offer some of the same functionality and are not complete replacements. What Blue Ocean had and these two do not:

Switching

  1. Manage Jenkins | Plugins | Available plugins: search for Pipeline Graph View and install it (Stage View too if your team is used to its table). Pipeline runs then have the Stages link.
  2. Change the bookmarks and links that point at /blue/…: wiki pages, chat messages, links pasted into tickets. Links that Jenkins itself sends out (in notifications, for example) go through the Display URL API plugin, and Blue Ocean's part of it (blueocean-display-url) can point them at /blue; once it is uninstalled they lead to the classic pages again.
  3. When nobody opens /blue any more, uninstall Blue Ocean under Installed plugins. The Blue Ocean plugin is a bundle: it brought in 18 more blueocean-* plugins (the editor, the GitHub, Bitbucket and Git parts, the REST API, the dashboard) and the Jenkins Design Language, 103 plugins in all with what they need in turn, and they stay until they are uninstalled too. Jenkins does not let you remove one that another plugin still needs.

Scripts that read Blue Ocean's REST API

Anything that reads /blue/rest/… (build lights, dashboards, chat bots) stops working when Blue Ocean is removed. The other two have their own JSON:

Jenkins builds in IntelliJ IDEA and other JetBrains IDEs

Pipeline Inbox for Jenkins, a plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later, shows the builds you care about with their Pipeline stages, failed tests and console logs in an IDE tool window. It does not use Blue Ocean: it reads the stages from Stage View, and, from version 1.0.13, from Pipeline Graph View when Stage View is not installed, so it works with a Jenkins set up with the suggested plugins. Input steps waiting in a running Pipeline can be answered from the IDE (Proceed or Abort) with either plugin. The build list, Pipeline stages, failed tests and console logs are free; starting a build, rebuild, stop and input steps are Pro (US$1.50 a month, with a 30-day trial).
