Resolving comments on Bitbucket pull requests
A comment thread on a Bitbucket pull request can be resolved when the discussion is done and reopened when it is not. Bitbucket Cloud has had resolvable comments since July 2023, Bitbucket Data Center since 8.9. Neither has a merge check that waits for unresolved comments: the check that waits is for tasks. Below is how it works, from Atlassian's Review code in a pull request and Finish code reviews faster with improved comment navigation (Cloud), Commenting on a pull request (Data Center 10.5) and Enhancements to your code review workflow (8.9), and the two REST references.
Bitbucket Cloud
- Resolving: Resolve on a comment resolves its thread, and Reopen opens it again when more needs to be done. Resolved threads are collapsed in the diff by default. Atlassian's page suggests it as a way to make sure every comment is addressed before approving or merging.
- Finding them: the Comments dropdown above the diff header shows how many comments are unresolved and lists the unresolved ones first, then the resolved ones; outdated comments are labeled. A comment on an earlier version of a file is behind the button with a number at the top of that file's diff, and an outdated comment is reopened from there.
- Since: Atlassian announced resolvable comments and the dropdown on July 31, 2023.
- From the REST API:
POST …/2.0/repositories/{workspace}/{repo_slug}/pullrequests/{pull_request_id}/comments/{comment_id}/resolveresolves a thread (200 with the resolution; 409 if it is already resolved), andDELETEon the same path reopens it (204; 404 if it was not resolved). Only a top-level comment can be resolved: for a reply the answer is 403. While resolved, a comment carriesresolutionwithtype,userandcreated_on.
Bitbucket Data Center
- Resolving: Resolve on a comment thread marks it RESOLVED and collapses it; it can be expanded to read. On a resolved thread you can react, but not edit or reply. It can be reopened at any time.
- Who: Atlassian's page says the pull request's author resolves comments once they are addressed, and that anyone with Read access to the repository can resolve and reopen them.
- Tasks stay open: resolving a thread does not resolve the tasks in it; each task is resolved with its own checkbox (see tasks).
- Hiding is something else: hiding an open comment only declutters your view.
- Since: resolving and collapsing comment threads came in Bitbucket 8.9.
- From the REST API:
PUT …/rest/api/latest/projects/{projectKey}/repos/{repositorySlug}/pull-requests/{pullRequestId}/comments/{commentId}with the comment'sversionand"threadResolved": trueresolves the thread, falsereopens it. The field is in Atlassian's published REST definitions from 8.9 on, not in 8.8. A comment carriesthreadResolved, threadResolverandthreadResolvedDate. The reference for this call says only a comment's author can change its text, and only that author, the pull request's author or a repository admin can change its other fields. A task, a comment withBLOCKERseverity, is resolved with"state": "RESOLVED"instead.
Holding a merge until comments are resolved
Neither Atlassian's list of merge checks for Bitbucket Cloud (Suggest or require checks before a merge) nor the one for Data Center (Checks for merging pull requests) has a check for unresolved comments (both read on October 26, 2026). Both have one for tasks: No unresolved pull request tasks on Cloud, No incomplete tasks on Data Center. To make a point hold the merge back, make it a task: Create task under the comment on Cloud, or turn the comment into a task on Data Center. See merge checks.
Resolving comments in IntelliJ IDEA
Pull Request Inbox for Bitbucket, a plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later, lists the Bitbucket Cloud and Bitbucket Data Center pull requests waiting for your review in an IDE tool window. A pull request's comments show as threads, with "2 open, 5 resolved" above them: open threads first, resolved ones folded away behind Show resolved, each with who resolved it. Resolve, Reopen and Reply are under each thread; on Data Center they need 8.9 or later. Reading the threads is free; resolving, reopening and replying, like approving and merging, are Pro, with a 30-day trial.
