"fatal: unable to access 'https://bitbucket.org/…': The requested URL returned error: 410"
Pull, push or fetch from Bitbucket Cloud in IntelliJ IDEA (or PyCharm, WebStorm, Rider) fails with this line. The saved password is an app password, and Bitbucket Cloud no longer accepts them: Git over HTTPS answers 410, its REST API answers 401. The fix is an Atlassian API token, and because a 410 does not count as a wrong password to Git, you usually have to make the IDE forget the old one yourself.
What changed
From Bitbucket Cloud's changelog (May 29, 2026): brownouts from June 9, 2026, and app passwords fully removed on July 28, 2026. During and after that, "Git-over-HTTPS operations authenticated using app passwords will fail with an HTTP 410", and REST API requests with them "will fail with an HTTP 401". New app passwords could no longer be created from September 9, 2025 (Atlassian's announcement). Git over SSH is not affected.
Why the IDE does not ask for a new password
Git forgets a saved password only when the server answers 401. Any other error code, 410 included, ends in "unable to access '…': The requested URL returned error: 410" and the saved app password stays where it is (Git's http.c and remote-curl.c; checked with Git 2.53 against a local stand-in server that answers 410). So the next pull fails the same way, without a login window. Before the fatal: line, Git also prints what the server sent with the error, on lines that start with remote:.
Switch Git to an API token
- Create an API token with scopes for Bitbucket: read:repository:bitbucket to pull, plus write:repository:bitbucket to push (how to create one).
- Change the remote's address to one with a username in it, so the saved app password is no longer used for it (with the stand-in server above, Git then sent the new username without the old password). In IntelliJ IDEA: Git | Manage Remotes…, edit
origin, and put the static username in front of the host:
https://x-bitbucket-api-token-auth@bitbucket.org/<workspace>/<repository>.git
(Atlassian's Using API tokens gives this username, or your Bitbucket username, for Git.) From a terminal:git remote set-url origin https://x-bitbucket-api-token-auth@bitbucket.org/<workspace>/<repository>.git - Pull again. When asked for the password, enter the API token.
To remove the old app password from Git's credential helper as well (Git Credential Manager on Windows, the keychain on macOS), run git credential reject with the host (on Windows, in Git Bash):
printf "protocol=https\nhost=bitbucket.org\n\n" | git credential reject
Next: Git Credential Manager and OAuth, November 30, 2026
If you sign in to Bitbucket through Git Credential Manager's browser login (OAuth) instead of a password, the same changelog (October 13, 2026) says that Git requests authenticated this way will be blocked from November 30, 2026 for Git Credential Manager versions before 3.0.0, and that affected users see a message after each push until they upgrade. git credential-manager --version shows yours (what to do).
A 410 from the REST API: version 1.0
The other 410 from Bitbucket Cloud is for its old REST API. On October 29, 2026, every api.bitbucket.org/1.0/… address we tried answered 410 Gone with an HTML page, with or without credentials, for GET and POST alike:
HTTP/1.1 410 Gone Content-Type: text/html <title>This API is no longer supported. For information, please refer to https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/bitbucket/deprecation-notice-v1-apis/</title>
Atlassian deprecated version 1.0 on June 30, 2018 and removed it on April 29, 2019, with a few exceptions (deprecation notice, updated June 15, 2026). A script or an old tool that still calls /1.0/ has to use the /2.0/ address of the same resource; for some of them there is none. This 410 has nothing to do with app passwords: a new token does not change it.
Bitbucket pull requests in IntelliJ IDEA
Pull Request Inbox for Bitbucket, a plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later, signs in to Bitbucket Cloud with an Atlassian API token (your Atlassian email and the token) or a repository, project or workspace access token, never an app password. The review inbox, diffs and discussions are free; approving, commenting and merging are Pro, with a 30-day trial. It also works with Bitbucket Data Center (beta).
