Bitbucket: "The diff for this file is too large to render"
Bitbucket's web page stops drawing a diff past fixed sizes, to keep the page from timing out. The changes are all in the repository; only the page leaves them out, so a lock file, generated code or a large data file can go unreviewed in a pull request. The limits differ between Bitbucket Cloud and Bitbucket Data Center (formerly Bitbucket Server); Atlassian's page for Cloud offers no setting to raise them.
Bitbucket Cloud
From Atlassian's page Limits for viewing content and diffs:
- One file: its diff cannot exceed 2,000 changed lines or 102,400 bytes (100 KB) of raw diff data.
- The whole diff: 8,000 changed lines at most.
- Files: at most 200 in a single diff.
- What it says: in a bug report fixed in April 2024 (BCLOUD-23199), "Expand all files" on a file with more than 1,000 changes showed "Diff too large. The diff for this file is too large to render". An older message, quoted in a community question, reads "Now that is a lot of code! There's simply too much in this diff for us to render it all."
- When a limit is reached, the pull request loads files individually: you move between them with the file tree. To have every pull request load that way, choose Settings → Load files → Individually on the diff and save.
- In a community answer, Atlassian staff add that a pull request just under the limits can still fail to load when the server's calculation times out, and suggest splitting it or reviewing it locally with
git diff.
Bitbucket Data Center
From Atlassian's article The diff for this file is too large to render (updated September 25, 2025) and the configuration properties:
The diff for this file is too large to render. You can still retrieve it manually with the following Git command. The list of changes is too large to render. Showing the first 1,000 files
- The first appears when the file's diff is longer than
page.max.diff.lines, 10,000 lines by default. - The second appears when the pull request or commit changes more files than
page.max.changes, 1,000 by default. - Both are hard limits, unlike Bitbucket's other page sizes: past them, no further page can be requested.
- An administrator can raise them in
bitbucket.propertiesin the shared home directory (Atlassian's example: a 12,384-line file needspage.max.diff.lines=24768, twice its length), then restart Bitbucket. Atlassian says the limits protect the server from oversized requests, so raise them with caution and watch the server afterwards.
An example (checked October 24, 2026)
- In the public repository atlassian/amps on bitbucket.org, pull request #1197 (merged, February 2026) adds a
yarn.lockof 3,278 lines, 157,459 bytes: past both of Cloud's limits for one file. Through the REST API, without signing in, its diffstat lists the file with 3,278 lines added, and the file's address (/2.0/repositories/atlassian/amps/src/{commit}/{path}) returns all of it. - Between two tags of the same repository a year apart (Release-9.5.3 and atlassian-amps-parent-9.14.0), the diffstat lists 679 files and 28,036 changed lines in two pages: past 200 files and 8,000 lines. Cloud's limits are the web page's, not the API's.
Seeing the rest
- With Git:
git fetch origin, thengit diff --stat origin/main...origin/featureto list the files andgit diff origin/main...origin/feature -- path/to/filefor one of them. The three dots diff from the merge base, as the pull request does. - Keep generated files out of the review: Atlassian suggests excluding files from the pull request, keeping large files in Git LFS (their diffs are not shown at all) and ignoring paths that do not belong in commits.
- Split the pull request: Atlassian suggests one concern per pull request, small enough to review.
- On Data Center, ask an administrator about
page.max.diff.linesandpage.max.changes. - In an IDE that reads the files from Bitbucket and diffs them itself (below).
Bitbucket pull requests in IntelliJ IDEA
Pull Request Inbox for Bitbucket, a plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later, lists the pull requests that wait for your review in an IDE tool window. It reads each changed file whole from Bitbucket and compares the two versions in the IDE's diff viewer, so a file Bitbucket Cloud's web page leaves out still shows its full diff, for up to 3,000 changed files. From version 1.0.27, when not every changed file could be listed, the Files tab says that only the first ones are listed and that git diff shows the rest. On Bitbucket Data Center (beta, 8.9 or later) the list of files comes through the same page.max.changes limit, while the files are read from their raw address, which page.max.diff.lines does not limit; we have not yet tried this on a real Data Center server. The review inbox, diffs and discussions are free; approving, commenting and merging are Pro (US$1.50 a month, with a 30-day trial).
