"Plugin 'Azure DevOps' (version 1.162.2) was explicitly marked as incompatible with the current version of the IDE"
You updated IntelliJ IDEA (or Rider, PyCharm, WebStorm, Android Studio) and Microsoft's Azure DevOps plugin stopped loading. From IDE 2025.2 on, the IDE itself carries a list of plugin versions it will not load, and every version of Microsoft's plugin is on that list. There is no setting that turns it back on, and no newer version is coming: the last one is from April 2023 and Microsoft has archived the plugin's repository.
What the IDE says
| Text | |
|---|---|
| Short form (Settings | Plugins) | Marked as incompatible |
| Long form | Plugin 'Azure DevOps' (version 1.162.2) was explicitly marked as incompatible with the current version of the IDE |
| IDE update window | Plugin incompatible with the new build found: Azure DevOps |
The texts are from the IDE's own message files (IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2.6.3). The update window's line can appear while you are still on 2025.1, before the update. With the IDE in Japanese, the short form is 「互換性なしとしてマークしました」.
Why, and from which version
Every IDE ships a file, bin/brokenPlugins.db, that names plugin versions it refuses to load. We looked for Microsoft's plugin (com.microsoft.vso.idea) in it:
| IDE | Microsoft's Azure DevOps plugin |
|---|---|
| IntelliJ IDEA 2025.1.7.2 | Not on the list: version 1.162.2 still loads |
| IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2.6.3 | All 53 versions on the list, 0.1.1 to 1.162.2 |
| IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3 | On the list, up to 1.162.2 |
| Rider 2026.2.3.1 | On the list, up to 1.162.2 |
| Android Studio Otter (2025.2.1) and Rabbit 1 (2026.2.1) | On the list, up to 1.162.2 |
The plugin itself does not set an upper IDE version (its build file turns that off, and its plugin.xml only says 2021.2 or later), which is why the message is "marked as incompatible" rather than "requires IDE build … or earlier". On the JetBrains Marketplace versions list it is shown as compatible up to 2025.1, so a 2025.2 or newer IDE is not offered it either. Source of the plugin: microsoft/azure-devops-intellij (archived, read-only).
What you can do
- Git repositories in Azure Repos: clone, pull and push need no plugin. The IDE's own Git works with the repository's HTTPS address and a personal access token (or Git Credential Manager).
- Pull requests: other plugins work in 2025.2 and later. The comparison for IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2 and later lists them with what each does, including Rider's built-in support.
- TFVC (Team Foundation Version Control): Microsoft's plugin also handled TFVC. Staying on IntelliJ IDEA 2025.1 keeps it loading (checked in 2025.1.7.2 above); Marketplace lists it for Android Studio up to Narwhal 4 Feature Drop (2025.1.4).
In IntelliJ IDEA, Rider and the other JetBrains IDEs
Azure DevOps Pull Requests is a pull request plugin by Lesstep for JetBrains IDEs 2024.1 or later, including 2025.2 and newer, and for Android Studio Koala and later. It works with Azure DevOps Services and with Azure DevOps Server and TFS 2018. Reading the review inbox and diffs is free; voting, commenting and completing are Pro, with a 30-day trial. It does not do TFVC.
